ICT HRLR & LRLR — High vs Low Resistance Liquidity Run Explained + Free PDF

ICT HRLR vs LRLR — high resistance vs low resistance liquidity runs illustrated on bullish and bearish trends

LRLR (Low Resistance Liquidity Run) and HRLR (High Resistance Liquidity Run) are two ICT classifications of how easily price can reach a pool of liquidity. LRLR liquidity runs through quickly with little resistance — HRLR liquidity has multiple short-term swings defending it and takes effort to reach.

This guide walks you through both — the meaning, the chart structure that creates each one, how to use them as profit targets, the link to fair value gaps and the bullish/bearish examples.

Before moving forward you should understand the meaning of liquidity itself.

According to Michael Huddleston (ICT), liquidity in trading refers to the buy and sell orders in the market.

As a trader you should know where the high probability of liquidity is resting because price seeks liquidity. Old highs have buy stops resting above them, and old lows have sell stops resting below them.

(I) Apa yang dimaksud dengan High Resistance Liquidity Run (HRLR)?

An old high having so many swing highs defending it — and the old low having so many swing lows defending it — is termed as high resistance liquidity.

A high resistance liquidity run (HRLR) occurs when price struggles to sweep out liquidity and takes a long time to reach an old swing high or swing low.

This situation arises when a liquidity level is defended by multiple resistance levels like short-term highs and lows in the way.

ICT HRLR — old high defended by multiple short-term swing highs creating high resistance liquidity that price struggles to reach

For example, if price is making higher highs and higher lows with a clear and strong uptrend after taking out sell-side liquidity, it would face difficulty dropping all the way down below the long-term low (or the long-term high in a bearish scenario) due to multiple resistance levels.

This resistance can often prevent price from reaching those stops. Significant news days such as NFP, FOMC or CPI releases can drive price through these high resistance liquidity pools.

High Resistance Liquidity Runs are generally considered less favourable for trading because it becomes challenging for traders to reach their targeted liquidity levels.

(II) Apakah yang dimaksud dengan Low Resistance Liquidity Run (LRLR)?

The short-term swing highs and lows forming between an old high and an old low are termed as low resistance liquidity because these highs and lows are easy to sweep.

In contrast to a High Resistance Liquidity Run, a Low Resistance Liquidity Run occurs when there is aggressive acceleration in price movement, leaving behind liquidity voids or fair value gaps (FVG).

In this scenario, price moves quickly and easily through areas of liquidity due to the presence of fewer resistance points.

ICT LRLR — short-term swing highs/lows form low resistance liquidity that price runs through quickly leaving fair value gaps behind

In a bearish trend price makes lower short-term lows, so it is easy for price to run below a recent short-term low to sweep out sell stops because it faces low resistance.

In a bullish trend price makes higher short-term highs, making it easier for price to run above a recent short-term high to sweep out buy stops due to the low resistance it encounters.

HRLR vs LRLR — Side-by-Side Comparison

The two classifications are mirror opposites of each other. Use this side-by-side as a quick reference.

  • LRLR — short-term liquidity, few defenders, fast delivery, leaves FVGs behind, ideal profit-target zone for the next leg.
  • HRLR — long-term liquidity, multiple defenders, slow delivery, requires displacement from a high-impact news catalyst (NFP, FOMC, CPI), ambitious profit-target zone reserved for higher-conviction setups.

A practical rule I use: target LRLR for daily and intraday profit-taking; reserve HRLR as a stretch target only on news days or on multi-day swing trades.

How to Utilise ICT HRLR and LRLR

HRLR and LRLR are utilised to set profit targets. As a trader I prefer simple, quick and effortless trade setups.

So Low Resistance Liquidity Runs (LRLR) are the most ideal, easiest conditions to trade — targeting low-resistance liquidity has a higher probability of success.

It is the easiest area to trade in price action. These trades feel simple, quick and effortless because it takes minimal effort for price to sweep those areas of liquidity.

If you want to target a high-resistance liquidity area like an old low or old high, then you should know it may take time and you may need a fundamental event like NFP or FOMC to align with your bias before the target can be achieved.

Also note that institutional order flow is important. If institutional order flow is bullish and price has created a long-term low, every swing high should be seen as a low-resistance liquidity run, while the long-term low is considered a high-resistance liquidity run.

In contrast, if institutional order flow is bearish and price has created a long-term high, every swing low should be viewed as a low-resistance liquidity run, and the long-term high as a high-resistance liquidity run.

Step-by-Step Trade Flow Using HRLR and LRLR as Targets

This is the exact sequence I run when I am setting up a trade and using HRLR and LRLR as my profit targets.

  1. Read the institutional order flow. Daily and H4 — bullish, bearish or neutral.
  2. Identify the long-term high and low. The structural extremes that define the larger range — these become your HRLR.
  3. Map the short-term swings. Every short-term swing high (in a bullish IOF) and every short-term swing low (in a bearish IOF) becomes your LRLR.
  4. Set the entry. Use a standard ICT entry — order block, fair value gap or breaker block on a lower-timeframe MSS.
  5. Set the first target as LRLR. The closest unswept short-term swing — this is the high-probability take-profit.
  6. Set the second target as HRLR (optional). The long-term high or low — only used as a stretch target on news days or higher-conviction days.
  7. Manage at first LRLR. Move stop to break-even and trail the rest if you are still working a stretch HRLR target.

Best Markets for HRLR / LRLR Targeting

The HRLR/LRLR framework works on every market that the ICT methodology is applied to.

  • NQ (NASDAQ futures) dan ES (S&P 500 futures) — short-term LRLR pools form constantly during the New York AM session, making the framework very repeatable on indices.
  • GBP/USD dan EUR/USD — Asian range high/low typically becomes the first LRLR target during the London open.
  • XAU/USD (Gold) — HRLR runs are most common around 08:30 AM ET news releases, when an NFP or CPI can drive price through long-term liquidity.

For traders in the United States who follow the CFTC FIFO and no-hedge rules, the LRLR concept maps cleanly onto NQ and ES futures (CME Group). Most NY-AM index setups deliver to LRLR targets without ever needing the news-day push that HRLR usually requires.

Common Mistakes Around HRLR and LRLR

These are the recurring mistakes I see when traders first start using these concepts.

  1. Targeting HRLR on a clean intraday setup. A 5-minute trade rarely has the runway to reach a long-term high or low. Set the LRLR as the first target and let the trade prove itself before considering HRLR.
  2. Treating every swing as LRLR. Only swings in the direction of the institutional order flow qualify as LRLR. Counter-trend swings are HRLR.
  3. Ignoring the FVG signature. An LRLR run almost always leaves a fair value gap behind. If there is no FVG and no displacement, the move was probably already a sweep — not a run.
  4. Forcing HRLR without a catalyst. Targeting HRLR on a Tuesday with no scheduled news rarely fills. The framework explicitly calls out NFP, FOMC and CPI as the catalysts that drive HRLR delivery.
  5. No stop management at LRLR. The first LRLR target is where you move to break-even. Letting a winner reverse to a loss after reaching LRLR is a position-sizing mistake.
  6. Confusing LRLR with a regular liquidity sweep. A liquidity sweep reverses after taking liquidity. An LRLR runs through and continues. The structure that follows is what tells the two apart.

FAQs about ICT HRLR and LRLR

Brief answers to the questions readers ask most often about HRLR and LRLR.

What does LRLR mean in trading?

LRLR stands for Low Resistance Liquidity Run. It is short-term liquidity (a swing high or swing low between an old high and an old low) that price can sweep through with very little resistance.

What is the full form of LRL or LRLR?

The full form of LRLR is Low Resistance Liquidity Run. Sometimes the term is shortened to LRL by readers, but the original ICT term uses the double-R for “Liquidity Run”.

What does HRLR mean in trading?

HRLR stands for High Resistance Liquidity Run. It is long-term liquidity (an old high or old low) that is defended by multiple short-term swings, making it slow and difficult for price to reach.

What is the difference between HRLR and LRLR?

LRLR is short-term, low-defence liquidity that price runs through quickly. HRLR is long-term, high-defence liquidity that takes time and usually a news catalyst (NFP, FOMC, CPI) to reach.

How do I use HRLR and LRLR in trading?

Use them as profit targets. LRLR is the first, high-probability target. HRLR is a stretch target reserved for higher-conviction days or news catalysts.

Does LRLR leave a fair value gap?

Yes — an LRLR run almost always leaves a fair value gap (FVG) behind because of the displacement. The presence of an FVG is a strong signature that the move was an LRLR rather than a stalled sweep.

How does institutional order flow affect HRLR/LRLR?

If institutional order flow is bullish, every swing high in the trend is an LRLR and the long-term low is an HRLR. If institutional order flow is bearish, every swing low is an LRLR and the long-term high is an HRLR.

What news drives HRLR delivery?

High-impact news such as NFP, FOMC and CPI typically provides the displacement needed to drive price through high-resistance liquidity pools.

Is LRLR the same as a liquidity sweep?

No. A liquidity sweep takes liquidity and reverses. An LRLR takes liquidity and continues. Both can target the same level — the structure that follows determines the classification.

Which timeframe should I use to identify HRLR and LRLR?

Use the daily and H4 to identify the long-term high and low (HRLR). Use the 15-minute and 5-minute to identify short-term swings (LRLR). Always reference the higher-timeframe institutional order flow before classifying any level.

    1. Hi Suraj, noted. A real chart example for HRLR vs LRLR is on the update list. The quickest way to see it yourself right now is this. Find a clean run of equal highs with nothing in the way, that is Low Resistance Liquidity, price reaches it easily. Then find a run into an old high that is protected by an FVG or order block, that is High Resistance Liquidity, price struggles to reach it. Mark which one price ran to cleanly. Annotated examples will go in with the next revision.
