Change of Character in trading is the first indication of trend reversal in the financial markets, and it helps you catch good reversal trades early.
In this guide I walk you through the change of character concept — the meaning, the bullish and bearish variants, the CHOCH vs BOS vs MSS distinctions, the step-by-step trade flow, common mistakes and the FAQ.

What is Change of Character in Trading?
As obvious from the term, change of character signals a possible change in the trend of the market — either from bullish to bearish or bearish to bullish.
It is a break of structure, but in the opposite direction of the previous trend, which indicates the change of market trend.
On the basis of market trend, change of character can be divided into two types — bullish and bearish.
(I) Bullish Change of Character
Bullish change of character is the reversal of market trend from bearish to bullish, and it happens at the end of a bearish trend.
In a bearish trend price makes lower lows and lower highs. At the time when price changes its trend, it breaks its structure in the opposite direction making a higher high.
Previously price was making lower highs — but at the time of change of character, price breaks the lower high and makes a higher high.
In this way the series of lower highs comes to an end and a new series of higher highs starts — meaning the trend has reversed from bearish to bullish.

(II) Bearish Change of Character
Bearish change of character is the reversal of market trend from bullish to bearish, and it happens at the end of a bullish trend.
In a bullish trend price makes higher highs and higher lows. At the time when price changes its trend, it breaks its structure in the opposite direction making a lower low.

CHOCH vs BOS vs MSS
These three concepts overlap but they are not the same — and confusing them flips the trade direction.
BOS (Break of Structure) — continuation. In a bullish trend, BOS is the break of the previous swing high. In a bearish trend, BOS is the break of the previous swing low. BOS confirms the existing trend is still intact.
CHOCH (Change of Character) — reversal. In a bullish trend, CHOCH is the break of the most recent higher low. In a bearish trend, CHOCH is the break of the most recent lower high. CHOCH confirms the existing trend has flipped.
MSS (Market Structure Shift) — initial reversal signal. MSS breaks any swing high or swing low — a short-term shift in delivery that may or may not become a full CHOCH. See my dedicated MSS vs CHOCH guide and BOS vs CHOCH guide for the deep-dive.
The shortest version: BOS = continuation, CHOCH = reversal, MSS = early reversal trigger.
Best Timeframe to Identify Change of Character
Market structure appears across all timeframes, and different timeframes often display different market structures.
So you can identify change of character on any timeframe by marking the previous structure.
The best approach is to have a clear understanding of the market as a whole. This includes lower timeframe, medium timeframe and higher timeframe structure. Think about each timeframe and align the market structure as a top-down analysis.
How to Trade Change of Character
In a bullish CHOCH, when the market changes its character from bearish to bullish, you should mark the inducement and wait for price to retrace back and take the inducement.
When price grabs the inducement, you can look for buying opportunities with confirmations like a market structure shift or trend reversal on the lower timeframe.
In a bearish CHOCH, when the market changes its character from bullish to bearish, you should mark the inducement and wait for price to retrace back and take the inducement.
When price grabs the inducement, you can look for selling opportunities with confirmations like a market structure shift or trend reversal on the lower timeframe.
Step-by-Step CHOCH Trade Flow
This is the exact sequence I run when trading a change of character.
- Read the higher-timeframe context. 1-day and 4-hour charts — identify the existing trend and the higher-timeframe key level price is approaching.
- Wait for price to reach a higher-timeframe PD array. Order block, FVG or breaker at the extreme of the existing trend.
- Watch for the CHOCH on the analysis timeframe. Bullish CHOCH — clean break above the most recent lower high. Bearish CHOCH — clean break below the most recent higher low.
- Mark the inducement inside the CHOCH leg. The first valid pullback inside the leg that produced the CHOCH.
- Wait for the inducement sweep. Bullish — price dips below the inducement low. Bearish — price spikes above the inducement high.
- Wait for confirmation. A lower-timeframe MSS, fair value gap or order block formed after the sweep.
- Enter on the retest. In the new (post-CHOCH) direction at the post-sweep PD array.
- Set the stop. Beyond the swept inducement extreme, with a small buffer.
- Take profit at the next draw on liquidity. Old high or low, relative equal level, or the next higher-timeframe FVG.
Best Pairs for CHOCH Trading
CHOCH works on every major instrument — GBP/USD, EUR/USD, USD/CAD, plus metals such as XAU/USD and XAG/USD. The cleanest CHOCH prints come from instruments that produce strong reversal legs at higher-timeframe key levels.
For traders in the United States who follow the CFTC FIFO and no-hedge rules, the CHOCH framework maps cleanly onto NQ and ES futures (CME Group) plus regulated forex pairs through US-based brokers. The 09:50 NY-AM macro window is a particularly strong place to watch for CHOCH reversals because the algorithmic delivery is most concentrated there.
Common Mistakes Around the Change of Character
These are the recurring mistakes I see when traders first start trading the change of character concept.
- Treating every counter-trend break as a CHOCH. CHOCH requires the break of the most recent STRUCTURAL higher low or lower high — not just any swing point. Random swing breaks are MSS, not CHOCH.
- Ignoring the higher-timeframe key level. A CHOCH at random place is unreliable. CHOCH at a higher-timeframe support, resistance, FVG or order block is high-conviction.
- Entering before the CHOCH inducement is swept. Pre-positioning into the CHOCH zone almost always ends with a stopped trade. Wait for the inducement sweep.
- Confusing CHOCH with BOS. BOS = continuation. CHOCH = reversal. Mixing them up flips the trade direction entirely.
- Stop too tight after the CHOCH. Stop must sit beyond the swept inducement extreme — not at the CHOCH level itself. Tight stops at the level get hunted on the second test.
- Trading every CHOCH against the higher-timeframe. A CHOCH on the 15-minute against a daily trend is a weaker setup than a CHOCH that aligns with the daily reversal.
FAQs about Change of Character
Brief answers to the questions readers ask most often about CHOCH.
What is change of character in trading?
Change of character is the first structural confirmation that the trend has reversed — the break of the most recent higher low (bullish trend) or lower high (bearish trend) that ends the existing series and opens a new one in the opposite direction.
What is the difference between CHOCH and BOS?
CHOCH is reversal. BOS is continuation. In a bullish trend, BOS is the break of the previous swing high; CHOCH is the break of the most recent higher low. They sit at opposite extremes of the same structure.
What is the difference between CHOCH and MSS?
MSS breaks any swing high or low — a short-term reversal signal. CHOCH breaks the structural extreme — a confirmed long-term reversal. Every CHOCH involves an MSS, but not every MSS becomes a CHOCH.
How do I identify a bullish CHOCH?
In a bearish trend, watch for price to break above the most recent lower high after reaching a higher-timeframe support or demand level. That break confirms the bullish CHOCH.
How do I identify a bearish CHOCH?
In a bullish trend, watch for price to break below the most recent higher low after reaching a higher-timeframe resistance or supply level. That break confirms the bearish CHOCH.
What timeframe is best for CHOCH trading?
CHOCH appears on every timeframe. For day trading, mark the CHOCH on the 15-minute or 1-hour and use the 1-day and 4-hour for the directional context.
Where do I place the stop loss on a CHOCH trade?
Beyond the swept inducement extreme — below the inducement low for buy trades, above the inducement high for sell trades — with a small buffer.
Where do I take profit?
The next draw on liquidity — old high or low, relative equal level, or the next higher-timeframe PD array in the new direction.
Does CHOCH always result in a change of trend?
No — trading is the game of probabilities. CHOCH gives a high probability of trend change but may fail. Its success ratio is greater than its failure ratio.
What if CHOCH fires but the trend does not actually reverse?
Then the move was a deep retracement that reclaimed the structural extreme. The fix is to wait for the post-CHOCH inducement sweep before entering — that filters out the failed CHOCHs.
Does CHOCH work on indices and gold?
Yes — NQ, ES and XAU/USD all produce textbook CHOCH reversals at higher-timeframe key levels, especially during the New York AM session and around US economic releases.
How does CHOCH relate to QML?
QML is structurally similar to CHOCH but can form at any non-structural higher low or lower high — earlier than the full CHOCH. Every CHOCH is a QML, but not every QML is a CHOCH.

Must the inducement be in the premium or discount zone?
its not necessary, but we try to look for trades in premium or discount so if the inducement is in premium or discount it will be edge
What is the difference between MSS and CHOCH?
MSS is a change in the state of price delivery which can either be a short term change or long term change.
While CHOCH means the change of trend and it is mostly the long term change.
From what I read MSS is just the update CHOCH.
CHOCH required breaking of Lows and Highs to the opposite direction, but it didnt require confirmation like MSS (displacement candle, FVG)
Yes you are right
I don’t know how to identify Bullish choch on chart, I read extensively about bullish choch but still it gives me headche
Bullish CHoCH is simpler than it sounds, Muktar. In a downtrend, price is making lower highs and lower lows. A bullish CHoCH happens the moment price closes above the most recent lower high — that close says the seller dominance has broken. Mark that lower high. When price closes above it, you have your bullish CHoCH. From that point on, look for buy entries on retracements.
