Inducement in Forex / ICT Inducement (IDM) — Smart Money Trap Identification & Avoidance

Inducement in forex / ICT Inducement (IDM) — smart money trap that lures FOMO traders into early entries before price reverses

Inducement trading involves identifying and avoiding the smart-money traps used to manipulate retail traders into executing sell or buy orders early.

Inducement in forex (also called ICT Inducement or IDM in trading) is an area on the price chart that triggers FOMO traders to execute trades early — and that early entry results in a loss when price sweeps the inducement before continuing the real move.

To be a successful trader you should know about these smart-money traps and avoid them.

In this guide I walk you through the inducement concept — the meaning, the BOS and CHOCH variants, the avoidance rule, the step-by-step trade flow, common mistakes and the FAQ. Real market examples are included throughout.

What is Inducement in Trading?

The act of persuading someone to do something is called inducement. In trading, inducement means any key level or market structure that persuades a FOMO trader to execute a trade.

It is a smart-money trap for retail traders, which leads them to believe in a certain bullish or bearish move.

In reality price does not move that way — it goes against the retail trader’s expectations, sweeping the inducement before delivering the real direction.

You can see the example of inducement trading in the illustration below.

Inducement in forex example — smart money sweeps the FOMO retail trader's stop above the inducement level before the real bearish move

What Does IDM Mean in Trading?

IDM is the abbreviation of “Inducement”. It is the same concept used by SMC and ICT traders interchangeably — when you see “IDM in trading” or “inducement in SMC”, both refer to the same retail-trap level that price has to sweep before the algorithm delivers the real direction.

How to Identify Inducement in Forex

As discussed, inducement is a smart-money trap which can take the form of an order block, a supply & demand zone or a support & resistance area.

The challenge is to identify which order block, supply/demand zone or support/resistance zone is inducement, and which is a valid point of interest for executing a trade.

To identify inducement in the forex market you should first know about valid pullback, break of structure (BOS) and change of character (CHOCH).

After going through these SMC concepts you will be able to understand valid inducement very well.

Types of Inducement in Trading

For better understanding, inducement is divided into two major types.

Inducement in Case of CHOCH

In the case of a CHOCH, the inducement is the very first pullback before price changed its character.

In other words: when price changes its character you have to look back into the price leg that led to the CHOCH and find a valid pullback. That pullback is the inducement.

Real market examples of inducement in the case of bullish and bearish CHOCH are shown below.

Bullish CHOCH inducement example — first pullback before the change of character marked as the inducement level that price must sweep before reversing
Bearish CHOCH inducement example — first pullback in the bearish leg marked as the inducement that traps early sellers

Inducement in Case of BOS

Inducement in the case of BOS is the very first pullback before the market broke the structure.

In other words: when price breaks its structure you have to look back into the price leg that led to the BOS and find a valid pullback. That pullback is the inducement.

Real market examples of inducement in the case of bullish and bearish BOS are shown below.

Bullish BOS inducement example — first pullback in the leg that broke the prior swing high marked as inducement
Bearish BOS inducement example — first pullback in the leg that broke the prior swing low marked as inducement

Inducement After Break of Structure

After a major BOS, price may shift its high without breaking the structure. In this scenario, mark the price leg that broke the high and find the valid pullback inside it. The valid pullback before breaking the high becomes the valid inducement.

For the detailed study see my dedicated Inducement After Break of Structure guide.

How to Avoid Inducement in Forex

To avoid inducement in forex, follow just one rule: “Do not take a trade until the inducement is grabbed.”

In a bullish trend you should not take a buy trade until price clears the inducement by going below the inducement low and hunting the stop losses.

In a bearish trend you should not take a sell trade until price goes up and clears the inducement by going above the inducement high.

Step-by-Step Inducement Trade Flow

This is the exact sequence I run when trading around an inducement level.

  1. Read the higher-timeframe context. 1-day and 4-hour charts — bullish, bearish or neutral structure.
  2. Identify a CHOCH or BOS. A change of character or a break of structure on the analysis timeframe.
  3. Look back into the leg that produced it. Find the first valid pullback inside the impulse leg that led to the CHOCH/BOS.
  4. Mark the inducement level. The high or low of that first pullback. This is the inducement that retail traders are using as a buy/sell zone.
  5. Wait for the sweep. Bullish trend — price must dip below the inducement low. Bearish trend — price must spike above the inducement high.
  6. Wait for confirmation. A lower-timeframe MSS, a fair value gap or an order block formed after the sweep.
  7. Enter on the retest. Take the trade in the higher-timeframe direction at the post-sweep PD array.
  8. Set the stop. Beyond the swept inducement extreme, with a small buffer.
  9. Take profit at the next draw on liquidity. Old high/low, relative equal level or higher-timeframe FVG.

Best Timeframe for Inducement Trading

To mark the inducement and execute a trade on the basis of inducement, use the 15-minute timeframe.

But you should always have a clear idea of the higher-timeframe market structure using the 1-day and 4-hour charts. Without higher-timeframe context, every pullback looks like an inducement and the avoidance rule becomes ineffective.

Best Pairs for Inducement Trading

Inducement trading works best on almost all trading pairs — currencies like GBP/USD, EUR/USD or USD/CAD, plus metals such as XAU/USD or XAG/USD.

XTI/USD (also known as USOIL) is harder to tackle using this strategy and has a lower win rate because the oil market produces more false sweeps that do not lead to a clean directional follow-through.

For traders in the United States who follow the CFTC FIFO and no-hedge rules, the inducement framework maps cleanly onto NQ and ES futures (CME Group) plus regulated forex pairs through US-based brokers. The 09:50 NY-AM macro window is a particularly strong place to watch for inducement sweeps because the algorithmic delivery is concentrated there.

Common Mistakes Around Inducement

These are the recurring mistakes I see when traders first start trading the inducement concept.

  1. Entering before the inducement is swept. The avoidance rule exists for a reason. Pre-positioning into the inducement zone almost always ends with a stopped trade as price sweeps the level.
  2. Marking every pullback as inducement. Only the FIRST valid pullback inside the leg that produced the BOS or CHOCH qualifies. Marking every pullback turns the chart into noise.
  3. No higher-timeframe bias. Inducement avoidance only matters when you have a directional thesis. In a choppy range, every level looks like an inducement and the framework collapses.
  4. Confusing inducement with the entry zone. Inducement is the level you wait for price to SWEEP. The entry zone is the PD array (FVG, order block) that forms AFTER the sweep — not the inducement itself.
  5. Stop too tight after the sweep. The stop must sit beyond the swept inducement extreme — not at the inducement level itself. Tight stops parked at the inducement get hunted on the second test.
  6. Trading every CHOCH/BOS without inducement context. A BOS or CHOCH without a clear inducement to sweep is a less reliable setup. The inducement-then-reverse pattern is the high-conviction variant.

FAQs about Inducement in Forex

Brief answers to the questions readers ask most often about inducement.

What is inducement in trading?

Inducement is a key level or market structure that persuades a FOMO retail trader to execute a trade early. It is a smart-money trap — price typically sweeps the inducement before delivering the real directional move, leaving the retail trader stopped out.

What is the difference between inducement in ICT and inducement in SMC?

There is no functional difference. ICT and SMC traders use the same concept — a retail-trap level that price must sweep before the real move. SMC traders sometimes call it “IDM”; ICT traders use “inducement”. The mechanic is identical.

What does IDM mean in trading?

IDM is the abbreviation of Inducement. The two terms are interchangeable in modern smart-money concepts material.

What are the two types of inducement?

(1) Inducement in case of CHOCH — the very first pullback before price changed its character. (2) Inducement in case of BOS — the very first pullback before the market broke the structure. Both are valid retail traps that smart money sweeps before delivering the real direction.

How do I avoid inducement in forex?

Follow one rule: “Do not take a trade until the inducement is grabbed.” In a bullish trend, wait for price to dip below the inducement low. In a bearish trend, wait for price to spike above the inducement high. Only then look for the entry.

Where do I enter after the inducement is swept?

After the sweep, wait for a lower-timeframe Market Structure Shift, a fair value gap or an order block to form. Enter on the retest of that PD array — not on the inducement itself.

Where is the stop loss?

Beyond the swept inducement extreme — below the inducement low for buy trades, above the inducement high for sell trades, with a small buffer.

What timeframe is best for inducement trading?

Use the 15-minute for marking and execution. Use the 1-day and 4-hour for the higher-timeframe market structure context.

Which pairs work best with inducement trading?

GBP/USD, EUR/USD, USD/CAD, XAU/USD and XAG/USD. XTI/USD (oil) has a lower win rate and is harder to read.

What is inducement after break of structure?

After a major BOS, price may shift its high without breaking the structure again. The valid pullback in the leg that broke the prior high becomes the valid inducement. See the dedicated Inducement After Break of Structure guide for the deep dive.

Is inducement the same as a liquidity sweep?

Inducement is the level. The liquidity sweep is the action of price taking that level. Closely related concepts — the inducement is what gets swept, and the sweep is what creates the entry opportunity afterward.

Does inducement work on indices and gold?

Yes — NQ, ES and XAU/USD all produce textbook inducement-and-sweep patterns, especially during the New York AM session and around US economic releases.

    1. if you are looking at a bearish choch means price just changed its trend from bullish to bearish.

    1. Thanks for the question, Aklilu. No, order flow and inducement are different concepts. Inducement is a deliberately created false move designed to trap retail traders before the real move begins. Order flow is the directional bias of institutional positions over a higher timeframe. They can coincide on a chart, but they describe different things — inducement is the trap, order flow is the underlying direction.
